Frequently Asked Questions About Genus MD

What is Genus MD?
A personalized information system developed exclusively for HCA affiliated physicians
 More convenient access to information
It is available online anywhere anytime
Makes the art of practicing medicine easier
Unlike other systems that are only accessible at the hospital or office, Genus MD combines both clinical and non-clinical information into a single point of access and is available over the Internet.

Your local hospital is introducing Genus MD in order to enhance the interaction between the hospital and providers and improve the care management capabilities for HCA affiliated physicians.

Who should use Genus MD?
Physicians that need:
Improved accessibility - convenient access anytime, anywhere over an Internet connection
Ease-of-use - more intuitive point and click user interface
Personalized - presentation of information is based on physician preferences

What are the differences between Genus MD and other hospital systems?
Genus MD was not developed to be a replacement for any other information system. Instead, Genus MD is the latest tool to be made available to physicians that can improve the interaction between the hospital and physician, all in an effort to improve patient care.

There are some key benefits that make Genus MD unique and a valuable tool to the physician.
Improved accessibility - convenient access anytime, anywhere over an Internet connection
Ease-of-use - more intuitive point and click user interface
Personalized - presentation of information is based on physician preferences
The cohesion of parts - combining clinical and non-clinical information into a single application
Extensibility - information can be presented from hospital and non-hospital systems concurrently, it's not limited to a single data system

Genus MD has the very intuitive point and click navigation that today's physicians have come to expect. Genus MD's browser-based design also accommodates the incorporation of additional data sources in the future. Based on our initial feedback, Genus MD has many features that physicians will find very appealing.

What is the response time of the application?
Genus MD is tied directly into the hospital's information systems and other non-hospital systems.
The application, at best, can run no faster than the existing systems and in many cases Genus MD is combining several system processes therefore the end-user may experience some latency
The advantage is that users will gain a unique view of information, convenience, and ease of use that are not available on existing systems

It is also important to note that application performance depends on other factors such as:
The users individual preferences in Genus MD (example: 1-day view vs. 7-day view of information)
Number of Genus MD applications enabled
 Client system and bandwidth limitations
 Client computer processing speed
Network connection speed and network traffic etc.

HCA's strict adherence to security measures can also add load time for each transaction. Because the different applications in Genus MD access different systems and data points, there will be differences in response times with each application.

All in all, Genus MD's page load time compares favorably with other highly secure Web sites. Initial feedback suggests that physicians will quickly realize that Genus MD's many features and benefits outweigh any application speed differences.

How much does it cost?
Genus MD is provided without charge to physicians just like other information systems provided by the facility. Genus MD does not replace any facility systems but is instead a complement to them. It's another convenience that improves the care management capabilities of the HCA affiliated physician and does so without charge to the physician.

Is it secure? Does it meet HIPAA guidelines for security and confidentiality?
Yes.  Within Genus MD, we provide strong access control and encryption to compliment the HIPAA Privacy rule in safeguarding the electronic information.

Genus MD applies the following security measures to support access control and encryption:

Confidentiality of the information in transit by use of Secure Socket Layers (SSL) with 128-bit encryption (if you are using Internet Explorer browser place your cursor over the lock in the bottom right corner and the encryption level will be displayed)

The identity of the user is verified by the use of a two-factor security scheme (e.g. a random number generated off of a token that the physician physically carries with them and the password that the physician knows)

Access control to a patient's record is based on the use of the access control applied within the facility clinical system (e.g. based on the Appropriate Access policies)

System security and the confidentiality of patient identifiable information is a paramount concern. While any information system may be secure, the security and confidentiality of patient information is ultimately the responsibility of the application and information end-user.

What support is available? Where and from whom?
Technical application support will be available from your local physician support coordinator. Times and service levels are determined by your local facility. Genus MD also features simple Help Files within the application that can answer questions about how to take advantage of the features and functions of the application.

Can I log on from any computer?
Because Genus MD is an Internet (Web) application, there is no software installation necessary. So, you could log on from any computer if the system meets the minimum technical requirements in order to operate properly. (see Hardware and Software Minimum Requirements)

How current is the clinical information that is presented in Genus MD?
Almost all features of Genus MD present information in real-time, meaning that as soon as information is made available to system users, it is available to Genus MD.
There are certain features however that present and process information based on periodic intervals. These cases are described within the online user documentation and or the application interface.
