The year 1920 was an historic one for the nation and the Teche Area.
On the national front, prohibition went into effect. Women gained the right to vote.
In Iberia Parish, Dr. Henry Dauterive teamed up with a small staff of nurses, fellow physicians and other healthcare providers to open Dauterive Hospital on Duperier Avenue within a stone’s throw of the historic Bayou Teche waters.

Dr. Henry Dauterive founded the hospital on a commitment to provide high quality, cost effective healthcare right here in Iberia Parish. As the parish continued to grow and expand, Dauterive Hospital did so right along with it.
The Duperier Avenue facility expanded to 47 beds before progress led Dr. Henry Dauterive to move the hospital in 1970 to its current location at 600 North Lewis Avenue.

Today, Dauterive Hospital, an affiliate of The Regional Health System of Acadiana, is a 103-bed full-service, acute care, accredited hospital that offers a full spectrum of services, including cardiovascular, general surgery, orthopedics, emergency care, outpatient surgery and rehabilitation.
The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program. And, Dauterive Hospital earned the 2008 and 2009 eQ Healthcare Solutions Platinum Level Louisiana Hospital Quality Award for improving the quality of health care for its patients.
Dauterive Hospital holds the prestigious Star Status in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Volunteer Protection Program, received initially in 2000. Star Status, the highest level of achievement possible in the program, is awarded through the federal agency’s Voluntary Protection Program to businesses and work sites that demonstrate outstanding health and safety practices.
The nearly 420 administrators, staff and volunteers that walk the historic halls of Dauterive Hospital continue to carry on the vision Dr. Henry Dauterive had when he founded the hospital – to provide high quality, cost effective healthcare … The Right Care.
